Maggie Weiss creates art with textiles, using dye, paint, printmaking, quilting and other methods to transform fabric into evocative statements about social justice, beauty, and the human experience. 

Insights and inspirations become apparent in her completed works, some of which have the remarkable ability to transform tragedy into beauty. Her subjects can be unconventional—the death penalty, female circumcision, and grief, to name a few. She hopes that shining a light on challenges and injustice will contribute to increased awareness, healing and change.

Celebrating the beauty of the natural world in other works provides a positive counterbalance. She has developed exceptional expertise at exploring transparency and layering using sheer silk and other fabrics. Pattern and texture overlay more pattern and texture, providing a rich experience of nature, light, and form.

Weiss has worked collaboratively with students of all ages at local K-8, elementary and junior high schools. In several cases permanent public installations were the result. Her work is held in public and private collections in the U.K. and U.S. and has appeared in international, juried and invitational exhibitions. She is the recipient of the Fiber Art International award at Art Quilt Elements in Pennsylvania. Book credits include The Art Quilt Collection, 500 Quilts, 1000 Artisan Textiles and The Art of Cloth. Other publishing credits include Quilting Arts, Quilter’s Newsletter and most recently, Uppercase Magazines.

Weiss shares her insights and techniques in workshops and lectures in person and online. She has taught in guilds in the U.S., U.K. and Spain as well as at the International Quilt Festivals in Houston and Chicago. She is a founding member and past chair of the Art Cloth Network. Other professional affiliations include Studio Art Quilt Associates and the Surface Design Association.
